A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
