Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs must be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
